Tree Mulch Ring Calculator

Calculate the volume of mulch needed to create a protective ring around your trees, based on desired radius and depth.

Tree Mulch Ring Calculator Guide

Use this tree mulch ring calculator to estimate cubic yards of mulch for a donut-shaped ring around a tree trunk. Enter trunk diameter, mulch ring radius from trunk center, and depth to get volume while keeping the flare clear.

How to use the tree mulch ring calculator

Enter tree trunk diameter in inches, desired mulch ring radius in feet measured from the trunk center, and mulch depth in inches.

The calculator subtracts the trunk footprint from the outer circle to find ring area, then converts to cubic yards.

Tree mulch ring volume formula

Inner radius (ft) = Trunk diameter (in) ÷ 2 ÷ 12. Ring area (sq ft) = π × Outer radius² − π × Inner radius². Volume (cu yd) = Ring area × Depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27.

The inner circle represents the mulch-free zone at the trunk — never pile mulch against bark.

  • Ring area = π(R² − r²)
  • Cu yd = ring area × depth(ft) / 27
  • Typical ring radius: 2–4 ft from center for young trees
  • Depth: 2–4 inches; thinner at trunk edge

Worked example

A tree with 6-inch trunk diameter, 3-foot mulch ring radius, and 3-inch depth: Inner radius = 0.25 ft. Outer area = π × 9 ≈ 28.3 sq ft. Inner area ≈ 0.2 sq ft.

Ring area ≈ 28.1 sq ft. Volume = 28.1 × 0.25 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.26 cubic yards of mulch.

Proper mulch volcano avoidance

Mulch volcanoes — piled against the trunk — trap moisture on bark and cause rot. Leave a 3–6 inch clear ring at the flare where roots meet soil. Extend mulch to the drip line on mature trees when budget allows.

Material and maintenance tips

Shredded hardwood or arborist chips decompose slowly. Refresh annually as mulch settles. Pull mulch back from trunk each spring.

  • See mulch volume calculator for rectangular beds.
  • Wide rings suppress competition from lawn grass roots.
  • Do not bury root flare — it should remain visible.
  • Water deeply under the ring during drought.
