Mulch Volume Calculator Guide

Use this mulch volume calculator to estimate cubic feet, cubic yards, and bag count for garden beds and tree rings. Supports rectangular and circular areas with custom mulch depth and bag size.

How to use the mulch volume calculator

Select rectangle or circle, enter dimensions in feet, mulch depth in inches, and optional bag size in cubic feet. The calculator returns total volume and the number of bags to purchase (rounded up).

Mulch volume formulas

Rectangle: Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12.

Circle: Volume (cu ft) = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)² × Depth (in) ÷ 12. Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27. Bags needed = Ceiling(Cubic feet ÷ Bag size).

  • 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
  • Typical bag sizes: 1.5, 2, or 3 cu ft
  • Recommended depth: 2–4 inches for beds; 3–4 inches for weed suppression

Worked example

A 10 ft × 10 ft bed with 3 inches of mulch: Area = 100 sq ft. Volume = 100 × (3 ÷ 12) = 25 cubic feet.

That equals 25 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.93 cubic yards. With 2 cu ft bags, you need 13 bags (12.5 rounded up).

Choosing mulch depth

Two inches refreshes color and adds light insulation. Three to four inches suppresses weeds and retains moisture better. Avoid piling mulch against tree trunks — use a mulch-free ring at the base to prevent bark rot.

Ordering and installation tips

Bulk delivery by the cubic yard is often cheaper for large projects; bagged mulch is easier for small beds and touch-ups. Add 5–10% extra for uneven ground and spillage.

  • Fluff mulch after delivery — settled volume can look short on the ground.
  • Water beds lightly after spreading to help mulch settle.
  • Refresh organic mulch annually as it decomposes.
  • Pair with landscape fabric only where long-term weed control is needed; fabric is optional in most garden beds.
