Lawn Seed Calculator

Calculate the amount of grass seed needed for a new lawn or for overseeding an existing lawn.

Lawn Seed Calculator Guide

Use this lawn seed calculator to estimate grass seed in pounds for a new lawn or overseeding project. Enter lawn area, choose new lawn or overseed application, and select your grass type to get a total based on standard seeding rates per 1,000 square feet.

How to use the lawn seed calculator

Enter lawn area in square feet. Select whether you are seeding bare soil (new lawn) or thickening an existing lawn (overseeding). Choose your grass species from the preset list.

The calculator applies industry-standard lbs per 1,000 sq ft rates for each grass type and application method.

Lawn seed rate formula

Total seed (lbs) = (Lawn area ÷ 1,000) × Seed rate (lbs per 1,000 sq ft). New lawns use higher rates than overseeding because more seed must establish from bare soil.

  • Tall fescue — new: 8 lbs/1000 sq ft; overseed: 4 lbs
  • Perennial ryegrass — new: 7 lbs; overseed: 3.5 lbs
  • Kentucky bluegrass — new: 2 lbs; overseed: 1 lb
  • Fine fescue — new: 4 lbs; overseed: 2 lbs
  • Bermuda — new: 2 lbs; overseed: 1 lb

Worked example

A 2,000 sq ft yard needs a new tall fescue lawn. The seeding rate is 8 lbs per 1,000 sq ft.

Total seed = (2000 ÷ 1000) × 8 = 16 lbs of tall fescue seed.

New lawn vs overseeding

New lawns on prepared soil need full seeding rates for uniform germination and coverage. Overseeding adds seed into existing turf to fill thin spots — roughly half the new-lawn rate avoids overcrowding established grass.

Slit-seeding, dethatching, and good seed-to-soil contact improve overseeding success more than simply doubling the rate.

Seeding best practices

Buy fresh seed with high germination percentage. Spread with a broadcast or drop spreader in two perpendicular passes for even coverage. Lightly rake or roll for soil contact and keep moist until establishment.

  • Seed cool-season grasses in early fall or spring; warm-season in late spring.
  • Add 10% extra seed for slopes and irregular shapes.
  • Pair with our lawn fertilizer calculator after the first mowing.
  • Follow label rates — excess seed competes and weakens the stand.
