Garden Bed Border Length Calculator Guide

Use this garden bed border length calculator to find how much edging material you need for rectangular or circular beds. Enter bed dimensions to get total linear feet of border, stone edging, or landscape timber required.

How to use the border length calculator

Choose rectangular or circular bed shape. For rectangles, enter length and width in feet. For circles, enter diameter in feet.

The result is total perimeter in linear feet — the amount of edging, bender board, or stone border to purchase.

Border perimeter formulas

Rectangle perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width). Circle perimeter = π × Diameter. Linear feet equals the total length of material laid along the bed edge.

  • Rectangle: perimeter = 2 × (L + W)
  • Circle: perimeter = π × diameter
  • π ≈ 3.14159
  • Add 5–10% extra for cuts, corners, and breakage

Worked example

A rectangular raised bed measuring 8 ft × 4 ft: Perimeter = 2 × (8 + 4) = 24 linear feet of border material.

A circular bed with 6 ft diameter: Perimeter = π × 6 ≈ 18.85 linear feet.

Choosing border materials

Options include steel edging, composite bender board, stone pavers on edge, brick, and landscape timbers. Match material height to mulch depth and mowing equipment.

Flexible edging suits curves; rigid materials work for straight runs and formal layouts.

Installation tips

Set edging so the top is flush with or slightly above finished grade. Anchor with stakes per manufacturer spacing. Leave drainage gaps where water collects.

  • Call 811 before trenching near utilities.
  • Overlap or miter corners for a clean finish.
  • Pair with raised bed cost calculator for full project budgeting.
  • Combine with mulch volume to plan bed fill after edging is set.
