Raised Bed Cost Calculator Guide
Use this raised bed cost calculator to estimate total project cost including lumber, soil, compost, and liner. Enter bed dimensions, wall height, and unit prices to get a material cost breakdown before you build.
How to use the raised bed cost calculator
Enter bed length, width, and wall height in feet. Add your local unit costs: lumber per linear foot, soil and compost per cubic yard, and liner per square foot.
Results show total estimated cost plus a breakdown by material category.
Raised bed cost formulas
Lumber linear feet = (2 × Length + 2 × Width) × Height. Lumber cost = Linear feet × Price per linear foot.
Fill volume (cu yd) = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ 27. Soil cost = Volume × 0.75 × Soil price/yd. Compost cost = Volume × 0.25 × Compost price/yd. Liner cost = (Length × Width) × Liner price/sq ft.
- Lumber ft = (2L + 2W) × height
- Volume (yd³) = L × W × H / 27
- Default mix: 75% soil, 25% compost
- Total = lumber + soil + compost + liner
Worked example
An 8 ft × 4 ft × 1 ft tall bed: lumber $3/linear ft, soil $40/yd, compost $50/yd, liner $0.50/sq ft.
Lumber = (16+8) × 1 = 24 ft → $72. Volume = 32 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.19 yd³. Soil ≈ $35.56, compost ≈ $14.81, liner (32 sq ft) = $16. Total ≈ $138.
Cost variables to consider
Cedar and composite boards cost more than pine but last longer. Soil blends vary widely by region and delivery fee. Hardware cloth liner adds rodent protection — landscape fabric alone is cheaper but less durable.
This calculator covers materials only — not labor, tools, or fill from an on-site compost pile.
Budgeting tips
Compare box-store kits versus DIY lumber — kits save design time but may cost more per cubic foot of growing space. Order 10–15% extra soil for settling.
- Use our raised bed soil compost ratio calculator to customize the 75/25 mix.
- Check local reclaimed lumber or bulk soil delivery minimums.
- Factor drip irrigation and mulch into the full garden budget.
- Build in fall to fill beds over winter before spring planting.
