Why Cable Weight Matters
In large electrical installations, the weight of the copper or aluminum cable is massive. You need to calculate it to ensure your cable trays, conduits, and pulling equipment can handle the load.
The Components
Conductor: The metal core (Copper is heavier than Aluminum).
Insulation: The plastic coating (PVC, XLPE).
Armor/Sheath: Steel or lead protection adds significant weight.
Copper vs. Aluminum
Copper
The gold standard for conductivity.
- Density: ~8.96 g/cm³. Very heavy.
- Use: Residential wiring, high-spec commercial.
Aluminum
Lighter and cheaper.
- Density: ~2.70 g/cm³. 1/3 the weight of copper.
- Use: Main service entrance lines, long transmission runs.
