Understanding Fasteners

"Fastener" is the generic term for nails, screws, bolts, and anchors. Choosing the right one depends on the material you are joining (wood, metal, concrete) and the load it needs to carry (shear vs. withdrawal).

Nails vs. Screws

Nails: Great shear strength (side-to-side force). Best for framing and structural joints.
Screws: Great withdrawal strength (pull-out force). Best for decking, subfloors, and cabinets.

Coatings Matter

Interior Use

Bright, Black Phosphate, or Yellow Zinc.

  • Bright: No coating. Rusts easily. Framing only.
  • Drywall: Phosphate coating holds paint/mud well.

Exterior Use

Hot-Dipped Galvanized or Stainless Steel.

  • Galvanized: Zinc coating prevents rust. Essential for pressure-treated wood.
  • Stainless: The gold standard. Will never rust. Use near oceans.
