Rain Barrel Runtime Calculator

Calculate how long your rain barrel will last based on its volume and your desired watering flow rate.

Rain Barrel Runtime Calculator Guide

Use this rain barrel runtime calculator to find how long stored rainwater lasts at a given flow rate. Enter barrel volume in gallons and watering flow rate in gallons per minute (GPM) to get continuous runtime in hours and minutes.

How to use the rain barrel runtime calculator

Enter rain barrel capacity in gallons (common sizes are 50–65 gallons) and your watering flow rate in GPM from a hose bib, drip header, or bucket test.

Results show how long the barrel supplies water at that continuous flow before emptying.

Rain barrel runtime formula

Runtime (minutes) = Barrel volume (gallons) ÷ Flow rate (GPM). Hours = floor(minutes ÷ 60). Remaining minutes = minutes mod 60.

Actual runtime may be shorter due to sediment, dip tube height, and inability to extract the last few gallons.

  • Minutes = barrel gallons / GPM
  • 55-gal barrel at 0.5 GPM ≈ 110 minutes
  • Measure GPM with irrigation flow rate calculator
  • Gravity flow is often 0.3–1.0 GPM without a pump

Worked example

A 55-gallon rain barrel watering through drip at 0.5 GPM.

Runtime = 55 ÷ 0.5 = 110 minutes = 1 hour 50 minutes of continuous irrigation from a full barrel.

Sizing rain barrels for garden needs

One inch of rain on a 500 sq ft roof yields roughly 300 gallons — multiple barrels or a large cistern capture more. Compare barrel runtime to weekly garden gallons from ET-based watering to see coverage gap.

Rain barrel tips

Elevate barrels for better gravity pressure. First-flush diverters keep roof debris out. Never use untreated roof runoff on edible greens without checking local guidance — drip at soil level reduces foliar contact.
