Bottom Watering Time Estimator Calculator Guide
Use this bottom watering time estimator to find how long to soak potted plants from below based on pot diameter and growing media type. Get estimated minutes for fast-draining, standard, or moisture-retentive mixes.
How to use the bottom watering estimator
Enter pot diameter in inches and select growing media type: fast-draining (succulent/high perlite), standard potting mix, or moisture-retentive (high peat/coco).
The calculator returns estimated soak time in minutes based on pot size category and media absorption rate.
Bottom watering time estimates
Pot size categories: Small (< 6 in diameter), Medium (6–10 in), Large (> 10 in). Minutes vary by media — fast-draining absorbs quickly; moisture-retentive needs longer soaks.
- Fast-draining: 10 / 15 / 20 min (S/M/L)
- Standard mix: 15 / 20 / 30 min (S/M/L)
- Moisture-retentive: 20 / 30 / 45 min (S/M/L)
- Check top inch of soil — stop when moist
Worked example
A 6-inch pot with standard potting mix falls in the medium size category.
Estimated bottom watering time = 20 minutes in a tray of water. Verify the top inch feels moist before removing — adjust next time if under- or over-saturated.
Why bottom water
Bottom watering wicks moisture up through drainage holes, keeping foliage dry and reducing fungus gnat attraction. It encourages roots to grow downward and prevents dry pockets in moisture-retentive mixes.
Especially useful for seedlings, African violets, and plants prone to crown rot from overhead watering.
Best practices
Use a tray or basin with 1–2 inches of water. Remove pot once the surface moistens — do not leave sitting in water for hours. Empty excess from saucers after 30 minutes.
- Combine with potting mix recipe for drainage-appropriate media.
- Bottom water dry plants; top-water occasionally to flush salts.
- Smaller seedlings may need only 5–10 minutes — check frequently.
- Reduce time in humid environments; extend in hot dry air.
