Understanding Cement vs. Concrete

First, a common clarification: Cement is an ingredient; concrete is the result. You mix cement (the gray powder) with sand, gravel, and water to make concrete.

The Mix Ratios

The strength of your final product depends entirely on the ratio of these ingredients.

Standard Mix (1:2:3): 1 part Cement, 2 parts Sand, 3 parts Gravel.
Mortar Mix (1:3): 1 part Cement, 3 parts Sand (no gravel).

Common Cement Types

Portland Cement (Type I/II)

The standard gray powder found in every hardware store.

  • Use: General concrete, mortar, stucco
  • Cure Time: 28 days for full strength

Masonry Cement (Type N/S)

Contains lime for better workability.

  • Use: Laying brick, block, and stone
  • Note: Stickier and smoother than Portland
